Man accused of beating roommate's cat with hammer

- A 33-year-old man has been arrested by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office for allegedly beating his roommate's cat with a hammer.

"It's very sick, and I don't see how anyone, if they had a conscious of any form, could harm an animal regardless of what it is or where it's at," said Joann Rummelt-Baker, who lives in the area.

Investigators say the crime happened overnight in the 700 block of Machette Court at a Mobile Home Park in Rochester Hills.

The roommate told investigators the man was hitting the cat in the head with a hammer.

When he tried to stop him, the roommate pushed back and continued to strike the cat.

The roommate quickly called 911.

Deputies arrived at the home and found the suspect in his bedroom with the dead cat at his feet and a bloody hammer.

"Apparently the cat allegedly scratched him, but there is absolutely nothing that would justify taking out on an innocent animal this kind of violence," said Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard.

Eddie Taylor, who lives nearby, says this could lead to harming humans.

"They probably had that thought to do it to a person, but an animal is a first step I guess. That's crazy. I love animals, I love people, so to me that's just crazy," he said.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Cruelty to animals is a four year felony.
