Man arrested for setting off firework in Dearborn's Divine Child chapel

A suspect has been taken into custody Friday for setting a firework off at a Dearborn church.

Police say around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, a man walked into the chapel at the Divine Child Church on Silvery Lane. The man allegedly opened a Bible, put it on the floor, placed a firework on top of it and lit the firework.

He was then seen fleeing the scene in a newer Cadillac four door with silver rims.

On video two women praying in the chapel ran for cover as sparks from the lit firework fly in all directions. Luckily the women were not hurt.

The fire was quickly put out before any other damage was done.

"He comes in and opens a bible, puts it on the ground and then puts a firework on top and lights it," said Fr. Jim Bilot. "And you can see him running out of the chapel to his car and taking off."

Dearborn police say this person is responsible for a number of similar crimes in the city over the past week, including another fire at church down the road.

No parishioners were injured.

Chief Ron Haddad says he would like to personally thank everyone in the community and media for help in the apprehension of the suspect. He says once the suspect is charged there will be more information.
