Man breaks legs when jumping to escape house fire

- Authorities are investigating what caused a house fire on Detroit's west side early Friday morning.

The fire started around 3:45 a.m. in the 9100 block of American Stret, which is near Livernois Avenue and Joy Road. Neighbors reported hearing glass breaking moments before they saw the fire.

A man was still inside the home when the fire started. He jumped from a second-story window to escape and broke both of his legs.

"It was unreal because I wasn't expecting to see something like that this time of the morning," says neighbor Donald Stokes. "I was just trying to wind down from a day at work and I see my neighbor hanging out the window. I'm like, 'Wow, what's going on?' Then I saw the fire downstairs and I went from there.'"

Investigators say they found an illegal electrical hookup at the house, but are still investigating the cause of the fire since the neighbors reported hearing breaking glass.
