Man charged in shooting, carjacking of 81-year-old at Detroit liquor store

A suspect was charged Tuesday in the carjacking and shooting of an 81-year-old man on Detroit’s west side.

The victim, Herman Garth, was returning from a casino with his winnings when he stopped at Big Daddy's Liquor Store on Joy Road.

Two men approached him in the parking lot and robbed him of more than $700 at gunpoint.

Police say 25-year-old Corey Kelvin Hill has been charged as one of the suspects in the case.

It's alleged that after Garth gave them the money, Hill shot him twice and drove away in Garth's car. The other suspect fled on foot.

Hill faces charges of carjacking, armed robbery, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, unlawful driving away, receiving and concealing stolen property, possession of cocaine, carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a weapon, felon in possession of ammunition and felony firearm.

He received a $200,000 cash/surety bond.

Hill is due back in court for a probable cause conference at 8:30 a.m. on September 20, and the preliminary exam is scheduled for 9 a.m. on September 26.

Both hearings will be held before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court.

Garth was in the hospital in temporary serious condition but has since returned home.
