One man is dead, another person is hospitalized and two are in custody after shots ring out in Highland Park.

"I never imagined coming home from school to see this on my lawn," said witness Jimmie Brown.

A 29-year-old man driving a car was found shot to death inside the car near Church Street and John R at  2 p.m. Wednesday.

"Upon arrival, officers found a black male sitting in the vehicle, it looked like he had been shot in the back of the head," said Highland Park Police Chief Chester Logan. "And as a result, may have driven into a tree."

Police are not releasing details of how many cars were involved, or if there was a passenger with the man who was shot. But sources say another person is in the hospital in serious condition that may be involved in this incident.

"This car crashed across the sidewalk, across my yard, smacked my car and he crashed into the ditch over there," Brown said.

The chief wants the public to be patient while they conduct their investigation.  But he said that he is interviewing a number of potential suspects.

"We are still trying to piece this puzzle together," said Logan. "I don't want to give away too much information because this suspect may be watching the news."
