Man gets 1 year for crashing truck into Warren bus stop

A Roseville man who slammed his out-of-control pickup truck into a bus shelter full of people was sentenced Thursday to one year in prison and three years of probation.

"It was just so unbelievable," said victim Cynthia Gracer.

That's how Gracer describes the nightmare she and five others experienced on Aug. 2, 2017. They were waiting for a bus at 12 Mile and Van Dyke in Warren when all of a sudden a pick-up truck slammed into the bus stop, leveling it and seriously injuring three people.

On Thursday, 56-year-old Gary Deleo sentenced to one year at the Macomb County Jail. In court Deleo apologized and said he never meant to hurt anyone.

"I've been going through nightmares from the day it happened. I don't know, it's going to take a lot of time for me to forget about. I can't forget about it," Deleo said.

Gracer certainly can't forget about it - nearly 6 months after the crash, she is still walking with a cane

"When the truck hit the bus shuttle, I was sitting in the bus shuttle, and I ended up underneath the truck from waist down," she said. "I ended up in Beaumont Hospital, both legs I couldn't walk on. My one leg was broken and I had torn ligaments in one leg."

Deleo was considered impaired at the time of the crash - his blood alcohol was .07, which is below the legal limit of .08.

"You do appear to be remorseful, however your case represents a prime example of why you should never drink and drive," said Judge Richard L. Caretti.

Deleo will be on probation for 3 years following his 12 month sentence.

"That's all I want is a second chance to prove that I am a good person," Deleo said.
