Man in critical condition, shot in head on Detroit's west side

- A 63-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot in the head Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened just before 7:00 a.m. on the 12600 block of Mendota on Detroit’s west side.

The victim has been identified as Robert Mitchell, a longtime friend of housemates who were jolted awake when they heard the gunshot.

“I woke up to use the bathroom, before I got to the bathroom door, I heard POW. And it came from his room,” said Blondon Betts, who rushed to save his friend.

Blondon Betts and his wife called for an ambulance and are now hoping for the best. Mitchell has been their friend for 20 years. They saw the shooter must’ve known him well, because they knew exactly which room he slept in in the back of the house.

“They weren't looking for me, they would've sprayed the whole house if they were trying to kill us all,” said Betts.

Mitchell was shot from the outside of the house through the window, which is not easily visible and fenced in.

Detroit police do not have a description of the shooter at this time.
