Man killed in downtown Detroit apartment fire

One person was killed early Thursday morning in an apartment fire in downtown Detroit.

The fire started around 2 a.m. on the 10th floor of The Leland apartments, which are at Bagley Street and Cass Avenue.

A 53-year-old man was killed in the fire, which appears to be accidental. Authorities haven't confirmed what the exact cause is yet, but are looking into if the man may have fallen asleep while smoking a cigarette.

Someone working the front desk of the 21-story high rise smelled smoke and called 911. Residents on the 9th, 10th and 11th floors were evacuated. No other injuries were reported.

"It's a meticulous process where we're doing fact-finding, sifting through all the debris, taking pictures, taking information from people that were on site and witnessed it," says Detroit Fire Capt. Christopher Dixon.

Authorities are also investigating why they had some issues getting water to the building this morning while they were trying to put out the fire.
