Man killed while walking along side of I-94

Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident that happened Monday morning on Interstate 94.

Police say the driver of a Saturn Vue was driving in the left lane of westbound I-94 near Wayne Road when they struck a pedestrian who was walking. The pedestrian, a 29-year-old male from Belleville died as a result of injuries sustained from the crash.

Police have not yet named the victim as his family is still being notified.

Police aren't sure why the man was walking on the freeway.

"We're still in the process of determining exactly where the pedestrian was struck, if it was on the shoulder or in the left lane. Also, we're looking at other factors such as distracted driving; why the pedestrian was actually out on the roadway. There doesn't appear to be any vehicles in the immediate area that we could locate that he may have broke down, or something to that effect," says Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw.

The driver of the Saturn Vue immediately pulled over and called 911. Police say the driver is cooperating with the investigation.

Westbound I-94 at I-275 was closed part of Monday morning but has since reopened.
