WEB UPDATE (Tuesday): The owner of the granite company has refunded the $1,000 to Bill and Ruth.

A Macomb county man puts down cash for some household upgrades but instead of getting new granite countertops -- he says he got a proverbial "slab" in the face.

Bill and Ruth are like brother and sister, together they have been saving money to buy Bill's mom a brand new countertop. The fact that they paid for one and don't have anything to show for it doesn't sit well.

"You took our money and those countertops were for my mom for her birthday," Bill said.

On Friday, Oct. 22nd Ruth went into Great Lakes Stoneworks in Fraser ready to buy after getting a phone call from the business.

"She called me back before I came in and said, how are you planning on paying, cash or charge?" Ruth said. "I said it didn't matter. She said Jeff would take off some money - that should have been a red flag right there."

She and Bill's mom picked out a counter top they liked, signed a contract and paid $1,000 cash with the assumption the work would be done.

"I was assuming that by the end of the week, so if I did it by friday it would be installed by the end of the next week,"

They went looking for answers and found something else.  Ruth says after phone calls and in person visits only to find no one there. She made one last attempt, only to find a post it note on the door giving away the owner's address.

They feared they've been scammed and went to police. But they soon got a phone call from the owner of the business, Jeff Morelli.

Ruth: "What is going on with the business?"

"It shut down," Morelli said over the phone. "Everyone will get a refund this week."

When FOX 2 caught up with Morelli he told us the same.
