Man shot and carjacked on Hurlbut Street in Detroit

He was walking a woman to her door when he suddenly became a victim of a crime.

Detroit police say a 29-year-old man was walking a woman to her front door on Hurlbut Street at 3 a.m. Friday when he was shot and carjacked.

Four suspects approached him, an argument began and one pulled a handgun wounding the man in the shoulder. They then stole his car.

Police say the man's injuries are not life threatening. The four men involved in this carjacking and shooting took off in the victim's gray 2008 Chrysler 300. Right now, investigators only have a vague description of the suspects.

At the same time, this senseless act of violence shook longtime resident Tommie Bell.

"What I know of it is very little," he said. "I woke up. I saw the squad car out the window upstairs, blocking the street. My wife and I come down and saw the special unit down there."

Bell is a retired worker from Ford and has lived in this street for nearly 40 years. He said he is doing everything he can to keep it strong.

The street he calls home is plagued by blight and of course crime, as you can understand, Bell is fed up.

"This generation wasn't raised the way my generation was raised," Bell said. "Not to say that everyone is off course, but some many are, so many reasons."

But with that, Bell remains optimistic.

"I am hoping and praying that what was is," he said. "And what is was, this was a great neighborhood, and it will be a great neighborhood again."
