Man suspected in EMT attack charged with decade-old murder

DETROIT (WJBK) - The man accused of attacking two EMTS on the job in Detroit has been charged with a crime he has been wanted for that happened a decade ago.

Detroit Police held a press conference just after 1:00 to announce his arrest for the attacks and named his as a suspect for at least one murder. Watch the live press conference here.

Michael Montgomery, 30, has been charged in connection with a murder that happened in 2006, and is expected to be charged later Wednesday afternoon in connection with a kidnapping and sexual assault that happened in 2005. Charges are still pending for the EMT attack.

Montgomery will next appear in court for a probable cause hearing at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 28.

Authorities believe Montgomery attacked two EMTs with a box cutter early Tuesday morning.

Kelly Adams and Alfredo Rojas were called to the 3400 block of Third Street around for a seemingly routine call for a woman with an injured ankle. Authorities say the boyfriend of the woman being treated at the scene became agitated with the injury assessment and started attacking. They were both slashed in the face.

They were both seriously injured but were able to drive themselves to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

EMTs tell FOX 2 they aren't allowed to carry knives -- not even pepper spray -- and are usually left defenseless.

"I don't believe that lethal weapons are the answer for us. I think it goes against our sole purpose," says paramedic Jeff Gaglio. "But at the same time I think that there are non-lethal options that are definitely viable and need to be pursued. If you were to lay out weapons tomorrow and let me choose, I believe that pepper spray would be the weapon of choice and I believe that would be a huge step in helping us mitigate a lot of these situations."

The Interim Detroit Fire Commissioner, Eric Jones, has been in meetings with EMTS assuring them training is on the way to help them if they're ever faced with a situation similar to the one Adams and Rojas faced.

The two EMTs are still recovering in the hospital. Adams condition has been upgraded to fair, and Rojas' condition is now listed as good.
