Man threatened to shoot EMS workers because of hospital they were taking him

DETROIT (WJBK) - First responders trying to save a life have their lives  threatened instead.

Detroit police and EMS are on high alert after someone who lived at a house on Coyle Street  threatens to kill emergency responders.

It started with a 911 call Saturday morning and when the man didn't like which hospital EMS workers were taking him, FOX 2 is told he threatened to shoot them.

"He would take as many rounds possible to shoot someone unless he gets his way," said EMS Chief Sean Larkins.

Larkins says the crew immediately called dispatchers who contacted their supervisors. The department is taking the threats seriously.

Immediately any service calls to the same address on Coyle Street would be flagged and police would have to accompany any first responders who called to any location one to two blocks from the address.

Larkins spoke to responding crew.

"They were understandably disturbed and concerned," he said. "They were glad that we took it seriously."

FOX 2: "On Saturday did you threaten to kill the EMS workers?"

"We don't know about anything like that, not here in this house," said a man inside.

FOX 2: "Well this was the address."

Anyone FOX 2 spoke to at the address denied any involvement in the threat, but we are told Detroit police are investigating.

Detroit EMS is not taking any chances especially after what happened to Kelly Adams and Alfredo Rojas - the EMS workers responding to an ankle injury, ended up being attacked and slashed by a man with a box cutter.

"We want to make sure whenever these threats are made, that it is not something that is forgotten," said Larkins. "And when they have an incident, we want to make sure police are involved. Just the safety of the crew safety of the patient."

Detroit police believes the man at the address may be mentally ill and say he was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for evaluation.
