Man turns self in after 3-year-old boy dies from gunshot wound

- Detroit police are questioning a person of interest after a 3-year-old boy died from a gunshot wound late Wednesday night.

A spokesperson with Detroit police tells FOX 2 Demetrius Peels turned himself in to Detroit police overnight.

Police wanted to talk to Peels after his girlfriend's son died from a gunshot wound in an apartment in the 11700 block of Rossiter, which is near Morang Avenue and Kelly Road. Police say the boy was shot in the head around 7 p.m. and that he died later at the hospital.

Police say Peels carried the boy out of the home after the shooting, then dropped the boy at the hospital and took off.

It's still unclear right now who the gun belongs to and how it went off.

Police: mother's boyfriend is person of interest in fatal shooting of 3-year-old

The mother told police the boyfriend was having an argument with neighbors about a break-in, and that the neighbors shot into the apartment, hitting the child. Police say her story does not match up with evidence, though, which indicates the shooting happened inside the apartment.

It is unclear if the child shot himself, or if someone shot him.

Police have not yet given the name of the child.

This is a developing story. Stay with FOX 2 for updates.
