Man walking his dog attacked at park by pit bull

In Washington Township police are trying to solve a dog attack.

A man and his dog were at a park when they were attacked by another dog. He says that vicious dog and his its owner took off from the scene.

Tim Smith says he took his dog for a walk at Gilcher Park in Washington Township on Wednesday, as he does every day. But they never expected this.

Smith laid on top of his dog to protect it from a pit bull that broke free from its leash in Gilcher Park off 29 Mile and went after the small Havanese mix.

"I heard her yelling 'Bella stop, Bella stop' she yelled the leash broke," Smith said. "So the dog was free (and) he came charging at us."

Tim's dog Charlie Brown was also on a leash. Tim says he scooped him up and tried to hold him over the head, but the aggressive dog began biting and jumping on him forcing the 67-year-old man to fall on the ground.

"By the time I hit the ground, he had Charlie by the back try to get him underneath me so he couldn't bite him anymore," he said. "I got bit up from that too."

The woman kept calling for her dog Bella, but Tim says the dog continued to maul them both with the attack lasting around five minutes.

The dog owner eventually went to get her tan SUV - and lured the dog back to the vehicle with treats.

"The dog did go in the car luckily otherwise he probably would have killed us both," Smith said.

But instead of staying with Tim and Charlie and going to a nearby police officer parked on the other side of  park, the owner of the dog  took off.

Smith immediately called his wife who rushed over to find them both bitten and bloody.

"I can't believe she would leave him bleeding," Sera Smith said. "I know she is probably scared, that something is going to happen to her dog. But still you have to have control of your dog."

Tim went to urgent care and received several stitches on both of his hands. Sera rushed the dog to the vet - there he was treated for his 13 puncture wounds, and internal bleeding.

Both are luckily back home and on the mend. But the Smiths now want the dog owner to do the right thing.

I want her to come forward and own up to what she did to me," Tim said. "What she walked away from and make sure the dog's shots are up to date."
