Manhunt underway for armed man who fled DEA drug bust, barricaded situation

- A SWAT team spends hours surrounding a house on Detroit's west side. They were waiting out a barricaded gunman for nearly four hours who never came out.

Now police aren't sure if the suspect was ever in there at all, and a manhunt is underway with the man at large.

"I was washing my car and all I heard was a bullhorn saying come out with your hands up," said one witness.

Multiple police agencies converged on a west side neighborhood, believing a barricaded gunman was inside a house in the 1900 block of Fullerton near 14th Street. Residents who were potentially in the line of fire, were evacuated.

It all began around 4 p.m. Tuesday. FOX 2 was told an undercover drug operation by Michigan state police and drug enforcement agents went bad.

"The suspect attempted to flee the location," said Cmdr. Elvin Barren, Detroit police. "At which point he almost ran over one of the DEA agents. One shot was fired by the agent."

But the agent didn't strike the suspect. Instead surveillance teams pursued him and another man to the house on Fullerton.

The Michigan State Police and DEA surrounded the house demanding everyone out. Three women and a man left the home along with one suspect who was taken into custody.

But police believed the suspect - who has served time for violent crimes like armed robbery assault and drugs - had barricaded himself inside with another 41 year-old woman who was bedridden.

The Detroit Police Special Response Team eventually entered the home and safely brought the disabled woman out, but made a shocking discovery.
There was no barricaded gunman inside and after surrounding the home for nearly four hours, they are not sure if he ever was.

"SRT did make entry and checked the home thoroughly, all the crawl spaces," Barren said. "It appears the suspect able to evade capture prior to the perimeter being secured."

No description or name has been given yet by police of the suspect.
