Massive house fire in Farmington Hills contained

- Firefighters have contained a massive house fire in Farmington Hills Friday morning. The fire was near Interstate 696 and Middlebelt, and people say the smoke could be seen from miles away.

"I got to Middlebelt and 12 Mile and seen [sic] the emergency vehicles going to the street where we live," says John Randall.
John Randall wasn't the only one who saw the massive amount of crews -- or the monstrous flames shooting from the two-story home on Greenmeadow Circle. SkyFOX hovered overhead as firefighters from four of the five fire stations in Farmington worked tirelessly to put it out.
"It was like a volcano erupting from the top of the house. It would go down then erupt. It looked like they contained it and then it kept going," says Elizabeth Randall.
Crews were first called to the scene just before six in the morning on Friday.

The flames had a huge head start on them; they'd already made their way through the roof and were quickly spreading. Neighbors held their breath and watched as firefighters immediately went inside to see if the couple who lived there was trapped in there.
"The first priority is always life safety, so, before we did the attack, our crews went in and did a rapid search then tried to get the fire knocked down," says Lt. Jamie Neufeld of the Farmington Hills Fire Department.
Luckily, hey were not home.

Despite the efforts of dozens of firefighters who braved the cold and commotion, the house could not be saved.

The frigid temperatures did force them to take it slow while walking around, and put down an ice melter so no one slipped. Hours later, it's still hard for this close-knit neighborhood to process what happened.

"I'm just very grateful that everyone made it out and was safe. I was crying. I was sad; it was scary. Very scary," says Elizabeth.

Investigators say they'll be on scene still for most of the day on Friday. They aren't sure right now where the fire started, or what caused it.
