Metro Detroit vet shaves 2 1/2 pounds of matted fur from rescued stray

The Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society is helping rescue a severely matted dog that was brought to their facility. Workers say that when the dog was first brought in, they had a hard time figuring out what kind of animal it even was.

GPAAS says the dog is a stray and was dropped off at their Animal Protection Facility on Tuesday. His fur was so severely matted, GPAAS says it was hard to tell he was even a dog.

"The mats were so heavy over his eyes he could not open them and he could barely walk because of the filth weighing him down," the group's wrote on social media said.

He was taken to a veterinarian in Harper Woods where they sedated him and shaved him down. The vet could tell, too, that the dog hadn't received care for some time by the length of his nails.

GPAAS says the vet removed 2 and a half pounds of matted filth. The shih tzu now weighs 15 pounds and they think he's about 5 years old. Workers say he is a sweetheart and named him Dakota.

Many are asking about adopting the little guy, but GPAAS hasn't posted any information on that yet as they are waiting for him to make a full recovery.
