Primary results roll in; Duggan, Young advance in Detroit mayoral race

Primary Results are rolling in around the area with some expected - and surprising results.

Leading the way in the Detroit Mayoral Primary are the two favorites, incumbent Mike Duggan with 67 percent of the vote and second place Coleman Young II with 27 percent.

Four years ago Duggan got on the ballot as a write-in and made history, while Young is trying to follow in his father's footsteps.

Duggan, who is enjoying a big lead Tuesday is already planning his agenda for his second term.

We spent the last four years just getting the streetlights on, the park lights on, the busses running, the grass cut," he said. "Now we're going to build a Detroit where there is opportunity for everyone. The partnerships we are forming is really coming together well and I know we can land businesses. Now we just have to get our residents to get the skills to get those jobs and we'll be going in the right direction."

The race for the District 2 Detroit City Council seat results show president pro-tem George Cushingberry running third with 19 percent of the vote and is in danger of not making the runoff for the November cut. Retired Detroit police officer Roy McCalister leads with 25 percent of the vote while former State Sen. Virgil Smith is in second place with 22 percent.

Smith was sentenced to 10 months in jail for destruction of property after shooting at his ex-wife's car with an assault rifle.

The vacant District 1 seat created with the departure of disgraced State Rep Brian Banks is led by Tenisha Yancey with 38 percent of the vote and Pamela Sossi in second with 26 percent. A distant third is Sandra Bucciero (12 percent) followed by Justin Johnson (9 percent).

District 1 represents the east side of Detroit, the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods.
