Michigan ranks 4th highest in hate crimes as national numbers rise

Hate crimes are on the rise across the United States, especially in Michigan.

According to a new FBI report, hate crimes reported to police jumped more than 29 percent, from 309 to 399, last year in Michigan.

The mitten had the fourth-highest number in the country.

The FBI says more than half of Michigan's hate crimes were motivated by race.

Other motivators included religion, sexual orientation, disability and gender.

Nationally, California had the most reported hate crimes at 931, followed by New York and Ohio.
