Michigan State Police conducting raid at Dearborn Medical Clinic

Michigan State Police are conducting a raid at a medical office in Dearborn Thursday morning.

We're told the raid is happening at the Dearborn Medical Clinic on Warren Avenue, which is near Greenfield Road.

Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw says the raid is part of the fight against the opioid problem in Michigan, and that the doctor has been allegedly overprescribing opiates.

Michigan State Police say the scene is secure, but to expect delays and a police presence in the area.

In 2016, more than 1,300 people died from prescription opioid overdoses alone in Michigan. In the past five years, fatal overdoses have more than tripled. Opioid overdoses are claiming lives at an alarming rate - they're up 740 percent since 1999 - but it's not just illegal drugs like heroin. Oxycotin, vicodin, and codeine are all linked to the overdose deaths, according to Carmen McIntyre at the Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority.

MSP says those needing medical files from the Dearborn Medical Clinic can call the Department of Attorney General Criminal Division at (313) 456-0180 and reference Dr. Mohammad Derani.

One week ago, President Trump officially declared the opioid crisis a "national emergency" and pledged to ramp up government efforts to combat the epidemic.

Officials in Monroe, Mich. also announced this week they will fight harder to go after drug dealers who supply drugs leading to overdose deaths.
