Mom who left newborn in garbage calls it 'a mistake'

A newborn baby boy hidden in a garage, left to die and taken out with the trash.

Now, the child's mother is going to prison for life, as the 25-year old called the baby's death a "mistake."

Prosecutors say they just wanted to make sure she could never hurt another child.

Angela Alexie admits she shouldn't have left her newborn son alone to die in a cold Eastpointe garage, where he died alone on Christmas Eve 2014.

"I don't know what to say," she said.  "I didn't mean for it to happen. I don't know, I wish I could take it all back."

But not everyone bought the apology.

Angela Alexie will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole and Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith says that's exactly what she deserves.

"She left the baby in the garage then she started posting pictures of her new slimmed down figure," Smith said.

Smith says that the 25-year-old mother should have known better than to let the baby die. This baby was her fourth child. The older three were sent to foster care.

"Everybody knows you can turn a child into a fire station, a police department, a hospital, with no repercussions at all," Smith said.

Last month a jury took less than 90 minutes to find Alexie guilty of first degree murder, disturbed by how she stuffed the baby's body in a recycling bin.  He was discovered weeks later on a conveyor belt at a Roseville recycling facility.

"There's nothing we can do about bringing this child back," Smith said, "But we can certainly stop her from harming any other children that she might have if she was still on the outside."

Now Smith says, there's finally justice for the infant who never had the chance to be loved by anyone else.

"I give my kids hugs and my kids wonder why I'm squeezing them so hard," he said. "Tonight's going to be another one of those nights."
