Detroit police raided a liquor store and found an illegal pot growing operation under their nose.

Officers did not even have to use police cars to make this drug bust - with it taking place across the street from the 11th Precinct on the city's east side off Nevada Street at the Piper Liquor store. Inside was a large scale marijuana grow operation.

Inside the store were rows and rows of marijuana plants instead of bottles. Police found out by smelling the marijuana scent outside and followed their noses across the street. As they got closer to the store, the smell got stronger.

Officers got a search warrant and found roughly 46 plants a street value of $127,000 and found a suspect with $10,000 on them. A second location on Seven Mile was also raided where about 100 plants were discovered, police said.

Police say the whole thing had been in operation six to eight months, finding a lot of equipment inside and whatever air filtration they had clearly wasn't working.

Investigators are still tracking down the people responsible who were spending about $4,000 a month on renting the space.

"Forty six plants of marijuana which comes to about 12,742 grams with a street value of $127,420," said Police Chief James Craig. "That's pretty substantial."

"It's bold and brazen," said Cpl. John Siejutt, Detroit police. "You've got the best security across the street from the police station. who's going to break and enter your building."

The police FOX 2 spoke with said that the seized plants were very large, some as big as trees.
