Mother, 2 kids escape Ann Arbor apartment fire possibly caused by holiday decorations

A mother and two children are in the hospital after escaping an early morning apartment fire in Ann Arbor.

The fire started around 4:30 a.m. inside a unit at the Pheasant Run Apartments near I-94 and Stone School Road.

The children jumped from the second story to get to safety, as firefighters used a ladder to rescue the mother. All three are expected to be OK, including their cat.

The fire chief says an exact cause is still unknown, but it's likely related to holiday decorations. The fire chief says if you want to use an extension chord, don't go cheap -- make sure you have one that's UL certified, meaning it's been tested by an independent agency.

The chief says they may have been plugged in overnight. He recommends being careful not to overload sockets. He credits working smoke detectors for the family's escape.
