Mother, 2-year-old daughter shot after leaving liquor store

Detroit police are investigating after a mother and a young girl were shot early Tuesday morning on the city's east side.

The 22-year-old mother and her 2-year-old daughter are expected to be okay, but are in the hospital in temporary serious condition. Police are searching for the suspects right now, who may be in a dark-colored sedan.

Police were called to the area of Tacoma and Hayes streets around 1:45 a.m. and found the two had been shot. The woman had been shot in the back, and the girl was shot in the neck.

The victims told police they were leaving a liquor store near Houston Whittier and Chalmers when they noticed they were being followed. They told police when they pulled into a friend's driveway, one of the suspects got out of the car that was following them and started shooting. The boyfriend who was driving the car at the time wasn't hit.

"Our officers, seeing the injuries to the child, acted very properly and heroicly and conveyed the child swiftly over to St. John Hospital for treatment," says Detroit Police Capt. Darren Szilagy. "[At] 1:45 in the morning, children shouldn't be out at that time, so, they wouldn't be putting this child in danger if they were at home where they should be."

Nearly a dozen bullet casings were found at the scene.

Police are still investigating, but don't believe at this time that this was a random shooting. They're still looking at a motive.

Police say the also looked at surveillance video by the liquor store but didn't see any vehicles that appeared to be following the victims. They're seeking other surveillance video in the area.

The victims names have not yet been given.
