Mother who fatally shot son said he attacked her with piece of concrete

- Police say a mother shot and killed her own son early Wednesday morning in Farmington Hills.

The 24-year-old man allegedly forced his way into the apartment and his mother says she shot him in self-defense.

"It's a horrible nightmare for them, a terrible tragedy," said Chuck Nebus of Farmington Hills police. "Our hearts go out to them."

The woman, a 43-year-old mother, told police she had to shoot her adult son.

"The son approached her with a piece of cement or concrete," Nebus said.

Police say he was prepared to use the concrete block as a weapon and according to the mom was going to get at her by any means necessary.

"She reported that her son had broken into her apartment and there had been a shooting," Nebus said.

It happened at the shooter's apartment at the Independence Green Apartment complex around midnight.

"The responding officers gave CPR to a 24-year-old male who was shot inside the apartment."

Police say they already had been called out to the apartment earlier that night.

"There was a report of family trouble," Nebus said. "It was reported to us and to the officers on the scene that it was non-physical. The mother and son were present at that time. The parties agreed to keep the peace and leave.

"I believe there were no allegations of any kind of physical contact, there was nothing to arrest anyone for. There is a bit of history of family trouble."

The shooting victim's girlfriend and sister along with two young children, were also inside the apartment sources tell FOX 2.  However none of them witnessed the shooting.

Nebus described the woman as cooperative.

"I'd like to make it clear this mother was not arrested she was not taken into custody," Nebus said. "She volunteered to come to depart"

As to why the mother, who police say clearly pulled the trigger, was not arrested, police say that decision will be left up to the Oakland County Prosecutor. A decision is expected by Thursday at the earliest.
