Mystery man found badly beaten ID'ed by Warren police

- A 58-year-old man was found beaten and unconscious in Warren, now police are reviewing surveillance video to figure out what happened to him.

Surveillance video from Saturday afternoon of a man is seen shopping at the Family Dollar at Nine Mile and Ryan  buying Talon sweet cigars and sweatpants. On video you can see him pay for the items and go about his business.

Just 11 hours later that wallet was gone, and he was unconscious and badly beaten in the parking lot of a nearby church.

Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green says there was no ID. The cigars were still there - police tracked the cigars to the Family Dollar.

"A passerby sees a body lying in a parking lot right off of Toepfer and Ryan," Green said. "We respond and find this guy face down in a pool of blood, his eyes are swollen shut, he's bleeding from his nose and his mouth."

Police got the store video and a Warren firefighter recognized him from a previous incident where they helped him after a medical issue. Police then used fingerprints to positively ID the victim, 58-year-old Chung Tran who lives just down the street from where he was found.

Tran has been hospitalized and unconscious for days but appears to finally be waking up.

"It looks like he is progressing and doing a little better," Green said. "He can speak and we have a translator. And now we can find out  if he can remember, what happened. I guess that's the mystery that we still have."

Anyone with information on what happened to Chung Tran please contact Warren police (586) 574-4700.

"It's good now that we know who he is, poor guy," Green said. "Now we just got to find out what happened to him and who did it."
