I-75 reopened after accident injuring MSP officer

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - UPDATE: A of 5 p.m. I-75 has been reopened, according to Michigan State Police. 

A Michigan State Trooper was critically injured in a motorcycle accident while on patrol Friday morning. Sources are telling FOX 2's Erika Erickson the trooper is in a medical coma now.  

The accident happened on the northbound side of Interstate-75 near M-15. Those lanes are currently closed between M-15 and East Holly Road while authorities investigate.

MSP officials said Trooper Chad Wolf was on patrol and crossing over southbound 75 when a car hauling a trailer changed lanes and tried to exit. When that happened, the trailer collided with Wolf and his motorcycle. Wolf was dragged for several miles before the driver pulled over to a rest area.

The driver is in custody for questioning at this time, and is cooperating with police. Michigan State Police say the driver is a 72-year-old man from Waterford but have not released his name.

Wolfe was taken to a nearby hospital where sources say he opened his eyes in the hospital but has been unresponsive since, and is now in a medical coma. He's listed in critical condition.

"We ask that you please keep Trooper Wolf and his family in your thoughts and prayers," stated Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP, in a news release. 

Wolf enlisted with the MSP in 2008, and has served at the Jackson, Flint and Metro posts. The six-year vet of the MSP force is a husband and a father. 

MDOT suggests using Dixie Highway as a detour. The rest area is also closed during the investigation. Authorities have not given an estimate for when the roadway will be reopened.
