Oak Park man kills wife and her sister, turns himself in

After two women were found murdered in Oak Park on Wednesday evening, one suspect is now custody.

"This is kind of crazy because that has never happened in Oak Park before," said Fyiah T, a neighbor.

Police responded to a call at a house on Church Street around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

"When we got there, there was a person that was deceased in a car and later we found another deceased person in the house," said Lt. Samantha Kretzschmar of Oak Park police.

Police say the two deceased are sisters -- one age 53, and the other 66. One woman is the wife of a person of interest.

"The car that the ladies were in did strike a pole that was in front of the house," Kretzschmar said.

Families in the quiet Oak Park neighborhood heard and saw the commotion.

Neighbor Bertha Nelson said she, her grandson and her husband were working in the yard when it happened.

"We heard a pow and ran to the front," she said.

Police say the person of interest is 61 years old, the husband of one of the victims, and all three lived together in the house. They say he voluntarily turned himself in Wednesday night.

That man is in custody and the Oak Park police will present the case to the prosecutor for appropriate charges.

FOX 2 spoke to one of the family members who did not want to go on camera. They asked we respect their privacy.

Police have not yet determined a motive.

Nevertheless, the neighbors here feel safe and although tragic, this appears to be a domestic situation.

"This is a peaceful neighborhood and it's very secure because Oak Park police is always on it," Fyiah said.
