Oakland University students see first hand aftermath of Parkland shooting

- Some Oakland University students saw first-hand the aftermath of the school shooting in Florida.

"We had this great trip, all the students were excited and then a national tragedy happened," said Jeremy Heinlein, leadership and service programs, Oakland University.

When the Oakland students had booked their alternative spring break in nearby Coral Springs, they never expected to arrive in the middle of a national tragedy.

"You see it on the news and you think it will never happen to my community," Heinlein said.

Elan Pszenica was one of the students serving in nearby Coral Springs - working with people with intellectual disabilities. But when they weren't doing that, they found themselves at a fundraiser at an ice cream shop watching the community come together in the toughest of times.

"This is a real issue and does exist," said Pszenica. "This can happen at your high school or any public place really. The biggest thing is the eye opening thing that it can happen anywhere."
