(WJBK) - We are learning more about the couple killed in a horrific crash earlier this week in Canton and the driver who caused it by going the wrong way on I-275.
Nicholas Pare and Shannon McIntyre were engaged to be married - and their lives were ended as they were starting their lives together.
"They were smiling, everybody loved them, they joked, they played, it's a big loss," Sheryl McIntyre said. “I’m still in shock."
The Tuesday freeway crash killed them both. Michigan State Police said a wrong way driver got on I-275 and went south in the northbound lanes near Michigan Avenue.
Police say the driver hit another vehicle head-on. Nick and Shannon were in the car. Shannon's parents say their 7-year-old daughter was supposed to be traveling with her parents that day. They are thankful she wasn’t.
“Emily was going to be in the car," Sheryl said. "And she got strep throat. So when Shannon came over I told her to leave Emily here so she could rest. So she dropped Emily off and then we found out they got killed on the expressway.”
Now they want to know why. Why the driver was behind the wheel going the wrong way killing the people they loved so much.
Wolverine Lake Village Councilman Michael Stack was identified by his own council as the driver. They called out his alleged actions Wednesday night.
Michigan State Police say they are waiting on the results of blood tests and other parts of their investigation to wrap up. While they collect evidence a family is waiting for answers after losing a daughter so many adored.
"Shannon was very bubbly and happy person," Sheryl said.
"She always had a smile," said Tom McIntyre, her father. "Everybody around her, wherever she worked, they loved her."
Nick leaves behind two teen sons are without their dad and the couple's 7-year-old are now without both of her of parents just weeks from Christmas.
