Pets find new families and new homes at Meet Your Best Friend at the Detroit Zoo

About a thousand pets found a new home this weekend.

The Michigan Humane Society and Detroit Zoo teamed up to put on "Meet your best friend at the Detroit Zoo" on Saturday.

Dogs, cats, kittens and puppies from dozens of animal welfare organizations across the state were there, looking for a new home.

The event, which is one of the largest pet adoption events in the country, is held twice a year.

"It is an amazing feeling to see how many people come through this event and walk out with an animal, and the smiles on their faces and the families that are completed now because they have this pet, so it's absolutely wonderful to see this," said Michigan Humane Society spokesperson Ryan McTigue.

About 22,000 animals have been adopted since the program began in 1993.
