Suspect turns himself in for smash and grab at Twelve Oaks jewelry store

- Novi Police have one of three suspects in custody for the smash and grab that occurred at a jewelry store inside Twelve Oaks Mall Saturday.

Detroit Police confirms a 26-year-old male walked into the Detroit Police Department's 6th Precinct overnight Tuesday and turned himself in. He was held until Novi Police was able to pick him up for processing.

Police say the suspect may be facing other charges in addition to those releating to the smash and grab. A source tells us that after Novi Police picked up the suspect, he kicked out the backseat windows and assaulted an officer.

Investigators at the Novi Police Department are working to arrest the other two suspects. Police say this is the second smash and grab of the year at Tapper's inside Twelve Oaks.

"We've reached out to counterparts at FBI and state police and they are also assisting us with this investigation," said Sgt. Scott Baetens, Novi police.

On Monday investigators released new images of the three suspects responsible for the frightful moments that led to panic and chaos for shoppers inside the mall.

"We have reason to believe that they are part of a larger ring," said Baetens.

Police believe the suspects used hammers to break open a case inside Tapper's and they say no shots were fired during the incident

"They took two high-end luxury watches from inside the case that they smashed," Baetens said. "Our detectives were able to process the scene and we have brought various pieces of evidence to the state police crime lab for processing."

After the suspects got the watches, investigators say they ran through the mall and left without a trace.

"Initially three suspects were in Tapper's jewelry store and after incident they fled the area quite rapidly," Baetens said. "One was seen fleeing in a possibly gold Sebring or gold Chrysler 200."

Police say despite the incident, they want shoppers to know the mall is safe.

"We are well-trained and well-prepared if something like this happens at Twelve Oaks mall," Baetens said. "Officers were on the scene in less than two minutes and prior to arrival the mall was already in shelter and on lockdown."

Investigators say they were able to solve the previous smash and grab at Tapper's and want to solve this most text one also.
