Plans for cradle-to-career campus in Detroit get $50 million boost

DETROIT (AP) - Plans for a so-called cradle-to-career campus at Marygrove College in Detroit as part of an effort to create a hub for urban education are getting $50 million boost from The Kresge Foundation.

The funding was announced Thursday as part of the new P-20 Partnership that aims to include an early childhood education center, a kindergarten-12th grade school and a teacher education training program involving University of Michigan School of Education that's modeled after hospital residency programs.

The Detroit school district's board approved the program earlier this week.

The plan aims to bring new life to Marygrove College, a small liberal arts school surrounded by homes in a northwest Detroit neighborhood. The college announced last year it was shutting down its undergraduate programs due to declining enrollment while continuing other programs.
