Police chase ends with crash into DDOT bus

A driver trying to flee the police crashed into a Detroit bus on the west side Monday night.

Police tried to pull over a stolen black Chevrolet Impala in the area of Southfield and Joy Road and the chase ensued down Joy at speeds at more than 70 miles an hour.

It ended with a crash at Joy and Mendota when the Impala driver hit the bus, which was at a stop. There were no serious injuries reported.

"I was sitting back there and I felt a big old boom," said Kevin, who was riding the bus. "A whole bunch of glass was shattering everywhere. I saw a whole bunch of police cars I didn't know what was going on."

Passenger Habeeb Clarkbey said that his back was injured in the accident, but added that he thought everyone aboard would be okay.

"The driver is in custody," said Sgt. James Kemp of Michigan State Police. "We are pursuing leads to identify the other passengers."

As many as three other suspects escaped on foot from the Impala.
