A would-be robber picked the wrong target on the streets of Detroit: a Concealed Pistol License holder.

Now, the alleged bad guy is in a hospital bed with a gunshot wound. As for the good guy? He's safe and sound.

According to police, the suspect walked up to the man at the corner of Ohio and Beechdale with plans to rob him.

His plan backfired when the CPL holder pulled a gun and shot him at 8:15 Tuesday night. Police say the 21-year-old suspect was listed in critical condition.

A woman who lives nearby said it happened in the middle of the street.

"He was in the middle of the street just shooting up in the air,” said a witness who asked not to be identified.

“I'm looking at the smoke and he's just shooting and shooting.”

Harry Patrick lives in Detroit and said the man had to defend himself.

"You have to, you have to protect yourself,” Patrick said. “If you aren’t bothering anybody, then why are they bothering you?"

According to the unnamed woman, the suspect approached her earlier.

"Soon as he saw us I guess get out the car, he ran towards the driveway,” she said. “So I'm fumbling with my keys trying to get in and we're praying.

“And I'm thinking to myself this was a set up, he was trying to ask for help to get us to help him and then he was going to attack us, that what I was thinking.”

Detroit police say they don't know yet if the CPL holder will be charged.

People who live in the neighborhood say this needs to be a lesson learned that you cannot take what doesn't belong to you.

"It ain't going to work here,” Patrick said. “If you come up in here you got something coming homie, (you're not) going to take it for free. You're going to give something to get something baby."
