HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - A 5-year-old girl has first degree burns police say her sweater was set on fire and the adults treated the problem at home with Vaseline and tissue paper.
The young Highland Park girl was inside the family's home Friday with her brother and four adults. According to police, the girl's sweater that she was wearing ignited. It's unknown how the fire was started at this time.
Police said the family pulled the sweater off of the girl but didn't called 911. Instead, police said they rubbed Vaseline on the burns and applied tissue paper.
Two days later, on Sunday, an adult in the home called 911 when the girl started complaining of intense pain.
The girl was burned in the upper torso, under arms, and shoulders and is being treated at the hospital with third degree burns.
Four adults in the home were taken into custody including the girl's mother, father, grandmother, and uncle. They're all being held by Highland Park Police.
Child Protective Services was called and currently has custody of the girl's siblings while the investigation continues.
