Police hit the streets on biggest bar night of the year

- The day before Thanksgiving is considered one of the biggest bar nights of the year but police are also keeping their eyes peeled for drunk drivers.

FOX 2's Hilary Golston rode along with Oakland County Sheriff Deputies as they work to make sure everyone gets home safe for the holiday.

All night long the sheriff's office in Oakland County is on the lookout, stepping up patrols to keep drivers and you safe.

It’s not just about alcohol. Prescription pills, weed, over the counter meds, anything that you can take that can leave you impaired while behind the wheel.

"Any intoxicating substance," said Sgt. Jen Miles, Oakland County Sheriff's Office. "Even those over the counter medications, things you wouldn't necessarily think falls under drunk driving, it does.

The signs are easy to spot for trained eyes: weaving in the lane, not turning headlights on. The law can also pull someone over for expired plates or other issues.

and once an arrest is made there are three tests to be doled out.

One of them is getting your blood drawn at the hospital. Oakland County had 3,500 impaired driving convictions last year. They not only catch the perps who are out there, they are also able to convict them.
