Police: Man dies by suicide during confrontation with officers

A man died early Monday morning during a confrontation with police at a hotel on Detroit's west side near the Dearborn border.

Police were called to Victory Inn on Michigan Avenue, near Wyoming Avenue, for a domestic situation inside one of the hotel rooms.

When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect had a gun and was pointing it at officers, Detroit police tell us.

When he wouldn't put the gun down, a police officer fired one shot at the suspect. We're told the bullet did not hit the suspect. Police say, then, that the suspect took his gun and fatally shot himself.

No officers were hurt during the exchange.

People living in the area and those staying at the hotel heard chaos unfold.

"What I did hear is, 'Put your hands up! Put your hands up!' And I'm pretty sure the guy put his hands up; it was foggy. And then, maybe a second after that, I heard two shots," says witness John Houston.

The shooting remains under investigation.

Police have not yet given the man's name.
