Police: Man started two fires during Star Wars screeening
FARMINGTON HILLS (WJBK) - Police in Farmington Hills arrested a 24-year-old man over the weekend for setting two fires inside a movie theater early Saturday morning during a screening of Star Wars.
Police and fire were called to Riviera Cinema in the 30100 block of Grand River Avenue to a report of smoke in the building. The smoke was on the second floor and was on a desk in the projector room. The fire department put that fire out.
The other fire was also set on the second floor. That fire extinguished itself.
The entire theater had to be evacuated as officials responded to the scene. Nobody was hurt.
Investigators say the suspect was in the theater to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens when he left the theater and entered the projector room where he started the fires. They identified him as 24-year-old Nicholas Chelar.
He faces charges of arson and larceny and could face 14 years in prison.
