Police still searching for suspects in Highland Park officer shooting

All Highland Park Police Chief Chester Logan wants for a fellow officer struck Sunday morning in a shooting is just for him to be okay.

"The first thing I'm hoping and praying for is that the officer is OK," he said.

Reserve police officer Robert Ball was shot on Detroit's east side while at a block party on the 19700 block of Teppert around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

A gunman driving by on Manning Street opened fire. Ball was shot in the stomach and rushed to St. John Hospital.

Logan and other officers followed soon after.

"You have to get up, get to the hospital, try to console the families, talk to the officers, let them know that things are going to be OK," Logan said.

It's unclear what -- if anything -- sparked the violence. Ball was off duty during when the shooting happened.

"There was no drama at the block party, there hasn't been for 15 years," said neighbor Tammy Dewberry. "It didn't even start on this block -- it was around the corner and no one was outside, we were all asleep."

Detroit Police Chief James Craig shared some details about the investigation on the FOX 2 morning show

"He was not targeted because of his occupation, we don't believe that," he said.

Leads are few and far between. There are no suspects in custody and no one got a good look at the gunman or the vehicle he was in.

"I'd ask on behalf of the people of this city and the people of Detroit to turn yourself in before something worse happens," Logan said.

Ball is not only a reserve police officer but a veteran. He served in the marine corp -- something Logan says Ball takes great pride in.
