Police: Van crashed on I-75 when teens tried to switch seats while driving

HARTLAND, Mich. (WJBK) - Ten local teenagers hurt after the van they were riding in flips, rolling off of I-75 in Ohio.

It happened just after 1 a.m. Tuesday as they tried to make their way home from Cedar Point. FOX 2 has learned the driver and a passenger were trying to switch seats while the van was in motion.

It is just a month until students are due back in class and Hartland High School is dealing with a terrible accident. The van careened off 1-75, rolling over and ejecting Hartland basketball players Ellie and Lilley Kastamo - 16-year-old cousins now in critical condition.

Ohio State Police say the accident happened when the driver,17-year-old Jenna Halonen, tried to switch seats with passenger Lilley Kastamo while driving. Jenna Halonen is also in critical condition in Toledo, Ohio.

The Rossford Police Department in Ohio says the crash happened on northbound Interstate 75 by Buck Road, which is about 5 miles south of Toledo.

"My mom told me and I just didn't know what to say," student Charlotte Lemke said.

"Just shocked I guess, it's just upsetting that happened," said student Julie Lubeski.

Hartland High School students are stunned at the news their friends and classmates were involved in such a  bad accident. At least seven of the 10 teens in the van are students at Hartland high.

Besides the three students who were hospitalized - Caroline Halonen, Blake Pietila, Logan Pietila and Andrew Daavettila were also in the van. Investigators say they, along with three other teens, are okay.

"When they turn 16, you're giving them a license so it is kind of scary and you do wonder what the scenario was and I do feel for those parents too," said parent Dawn Lubeski.

Although Jenna Halonen is 17 with no restrictions on her license here in Michigan police in Ohio say it's illegal there between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. for anyone under 18 to drive with multiple teens in the car without an adult.
