Prisoner who escaped Chelsea facility caught by state police

Matthew Genther

An prisoner from a facility in Chelsea escaped briefly Saturday but was recaptured after a brief search.

Matthew Aires Genther, 37, escaped from the Special Alternative Incarceration Facility in Chelsea at 3 p.m. by climbing a fence.

Michigan State Police tracked him down in a vacant home near the facility that he had broken into. Genther had self-inflicted wounds at the time and surrendered peacefully. He was then sent to a hospital for treatment.

Genther was previously serving probation for possession of methamphetamine.

Following a probation violation, he was sentenced in September out of Van Buren County to go through the 90-day program at the Special Alternative Incarceration facility. Upon successful completion of that program in mid-January, he would have been released.
