Prosecutor: Gym owner with camera in changing room also recorded kids

- A former gym owner police say put a hidden camera inside a changing room at Switch CrossFit is facing new charges - involving children.

"This guy is really the worst of worst," said Eric Smith, Macomb County prosecutor.

Matthew Krakowski, 35, was originally accused of putting a hidden camera at the Clinton Township gym's changing room capturing video of a woman - who happens to be a police officer. She noticed the camera being pulled up through a cutaway ceiling tile.

Now it's alleged she wasn't the only victim.

"You're bringing in these people under the guise of working out and getting healthier." Smith said. "In the meantime he's taking advantage of that."

Prosecutors say the new charges stem from 2014 and 2015, adding up to 13 counts of capturing an image of an unclothed person and one count of child sexually abusive activity.
"He gets these people to trust him and they're bringing in their kids and teams in there - there are teams of children that are going in there to work out," Smith said.

"My client and I are aware the substance of the charges against him and ask the court to enter a not guilty plea for each count," said Stephen Rabaut, Krakowski's defense attorney. "He's not a risk of flight whatsoever - he's not a risk to the community whatsoever."

But prosecutors say he is a risk - that all of these victims had a reasonable expectation of privacy - and these new charges - involving kids.

"He's not going to get a deal - we're going to convict him and we're going to ask for him to go to prison," Smith said.

Krakowski had been out on a personal bond, but with these new charges - the judge has now set the bond at $100,000 cash. The prosecutor said more people are captured on camera but they have not been identified - so if you worked out at that gym - contact Clinton Township police.
