GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - A rape suspect was charged in a second violent attack, accused of stabbing a Grosse Pointe Park woman last month.
Sitting quiet and calm, 18-year-old Darian Winfield was taken away in handcuffs Thursday. He was arraigned on the charge of assault with intent to murder after allegedly stabbing a woman in the chest, face and neck.
Judge: "Is there anything you want to say before I set bond?"
"No," Winfield said.
Police say Winfield asked a 48-year-old woman, walking home on Cadieux to use her phone. But after making a call to a wrong number, police say Winfield began following her. Then he allegedly stabbed her several times before running off.
"We've had the victim, she's been in to look at the identification and has been into our department," said Stephen Poloni, Grosse Pointe Park director of public safety. "She is doing fairly well at this time."
The teen is also charged for the stabbing and attempted sexual assault of another woman on Radnor on Detroit's east side Dec. 30. That woman fought him off with a Taser, then ran to her sister's house.
"It's horrific, for the victims that is something they deal with the rest of their lives," Poloni said. "It is just a sad, sad situation."
While Winfield is officially charged in these two attacks, Detroit police say he's also suspected in two other sexual assaults and of raping and killing 17-year-old Genaye Washington.
"We're just relieved that we have an arrest in the case," Poloni said. "And have this suspect off the streets."
DNA results are pending, while Winfield's family has said police have the wrong person and insist Winfield is innocent. His family was not in court Thursday.
Winfield is being held on $1 million bond and faces life in prison. He is due back in court in Grosse Pointe Park in two weeks..
