Red Wings players spend time in community ahead of training camp

DETROIT (WJBK) - Five players from the Red Wings hit the road in Detroit on their 9th annual community tour.

The players normally hear the cheers on the ice, but on Wednesday they won applause for what they’re doing in the community before taking off to Traverse City for training camp.

The team donated $3,500 to several worthy causes, including the Friendship Circle, where adults with special needs showed off their artistic talents and cooking skills.

“I think it’s just an amazing thing to come here. It’s really eye-opening that all these people volunteer their time to help these guys and girls that are truly amazing people,” said defenseman Nick Jensen.

Other Red Wings swung by the Parade Company and saw that prep work has already started for Detroit's Thanksgiving Parade.

“This is hockey town. So to have Red Wing players and here and be recognized by the organization and the Illitch family - we’re honored,” said Tony Michaels, President of the Parade Company

The players even decorated one of the floats.

“It’s cool to see how many volunteers they have who keep coming back - to see it up close and person - it’s pretty spectacular,” said forward Luke Glendening.

From there it was off to help furnish a home for the non-profit humble design, which helps families transition out of shelters.
