Roseville police bust armed robbers who used Craigslist

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) - Roseville police bust three suspects for a string of armed robberies, saying they were luring their victims through Craigslist by pretending to be selling a car.

It was a bold scheme that police say three suspects ages 20, 17, and 16 offering vehicles for sale online.

"Very well organized, heavily armed and very dangerous," said Roseville Police Chief James Berlin. "One vehicle was stolen originally and they used that vehicle to lure other potential buyers out. And when they came out with thousands of dollars in pocket thinking they were going to buy a car, they were robbed as well."

But the group had no idea that when they posted a photo of a 2006 Trailblazer on Craigslist that law enforcement from various departments working together would respond to the ad.

Eventually they met the suspects in the area of Gratiot and Shadowoods Monday night

"We had backup units converge on suspect vehicle," Berlin said. "A short chase ensued ... and one suspect jumped out of car and tried to flee on foot.

"We were able to box them in and take into custody without incident."

Police say a handgun was also recovered during the incident.

The suspects, who are from Detroit, will be arraigned this week and police believe they are responsible for pulling off these crimes in Roseville and one in Eastpointe.

"We know of four transactions for sure that they are going to be charged with, but we believe there could be more," Berlin said.

If you are interested in buying anything posted on Craigslist police recommend caution. Berlin offered the following tips:

"Go to your local police department and meet in the parking lot," Berlin said. "Our lot has a camera on it most departments provide the same service. These people don't want to be on camera."
