Royal Oak residents ask for art removed from Veteran's Memorial

Some Royal Oak residents are unhappy about a piece of artwork that was recently installed at the Veteran's Memorial Plaza.

Local veterans want it removed from the land that's supposed to be dedicated to the memorial. The issue was brought up at a city meeting Monday night.

"It is not that we don't want art on the dedicated land where the memorial site sits, it is that the veterans and others would like art that relates to the veterans," explained resident Carol Hennessey.

The veterans in Royal Oak and the members of the VFW and American Legion believe the display is disrespectful to those who have bravely served our country.

Council members said the Commission for the Arts is always accepting new applications for new art, like a piece that would honor veterans.

The piece that's there now is due to be removed in the summer.
