Six men with guns, bats rob man in Ypsilanti home

- Six men armed with guns and baseball bats broke into an Ypsilanti house stealing anything they could get their hands on.

One of those suspects is in custody but police are still looking for the five others still on the run.

The armed suspects broke into a residence in the 700 block of Washtenaw Street where they robbed the homeowner, stealing money, electronics and suspected marijuana, say police.

Some Eastern Michigan University students were startled after hearing of an armed robbery just steps from where they live in Ypsilanti.

"It is weird, we've had like other incidents we've heard about," said Erin Anderson, an EMU grad student. "We're like, 'Wow that's a block from our house."

"Ypsi is not the safest place," said EMU student Kyle Tillman. "But still, knowing that I live around here that an armed robbery happened. It's kind of concerning."

Ypsilanti police tracked down and arrested one suspect not long after. Investigators say the victim knows the suspect behind bars, but doesn't know the other five men from Ypsilanti and Belleville, still at large.

Police say they need the public's help hunting down those other five men, only described as black males in their early 20s. Police say they already have several leads.

"It's freaky -- it's right by the school and we haven't heard anything about it yet," said Anderson.

An EMU spokesperson says the robbery happened off of campus and there's no imminent threat to students.

Police need your help to find those other five men involved. If you have any information, you're asked to call Ypsilanti Police at (734) 483-9510 or crime stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
