Southfield burglary suspects boxed in after chase, 4 arrested

- Police chase a car full of burglary suspects that ended with the vehicle crashing head-on into police in a Southfield neighborhood.

It started as a home invasion at a home on Larkmore around 10:30 Thursday mroning. Hawkins said four men kicked in the front door and tried stealing whatever they could - until the police showed up when they were tipped off my residents who saw it all go down. The caller was able to give all the information.

"The home address. The vehicle description, including license plate number. The description of the individuals involved, stayed on the line with the dispatcher," he said.

Hawkins said the four guys were spotted carrying musical instruments, game consoles, and other items and they jumped into the car.

At the corner of Berkshire and Winchester in Southfield, it came to an end when the driver pointed his Monte Carlo at a squad car and drove into it head on. Then he backed into a patrol car and tried to get away. However, both officers he hit weren't done and were able to block him in and arrest him and three people in the car. Southfield Police Chief Eric Hawkins said at that point, they knew they didn't have a chance.

"That pretty much gave up. They put their hands in the air. So, there wasn't much force needed to take them into custody," Hawskins said.

One of the homeowners came to the crash scene to idenify her belongings.

Forunately, no one was home during the break in.

The men arrested include an 18-year-old from Redford, 18-year-old from Romulus, a 21-year-old from Westland, and a 26-year-old from Detroit. The chief says one of them has outstanding warrants out of Oak Park for home invasion.

"So it sounds like these individuals are fairly active."

The husband who lives at the home said that a lot of damage was done inside the house. Hawkins called it unusual.

"Normally, we don't see that. Normally, they would go in, take what they want they want, and quickly get away, but for whatever reason, there was a lot of damage to the house," he said.

All four face a long list of charges and investigators are trying to figure out if there's a connection between the homeowners and suspects.
